Embankment

Written in response to the theme ‘stone’.

On the other side of the embankment

rests a stone that was ours to throw.

We waltzed below the stars and moonlight

never wanting to let go.

‘Happiness is just a stone’s throw away’

and it seemed we threw ours

over the little river

where it landed among the stars.

The air grew colder

as you let out a condensed sigh,

throwing back your arm

and letting that little stone fly.

Exposed and alone it soared

and grew wings,

ripping through the air, playing a beautiful song

then landing, it sings

to me a song once heard

and only understood by us two

I stared deep into your eyes and soul

and for the first time, I saw you.

With no bridge to cross

or stepping stone,

we choose happiness over fear

but like everyone we are prone

to forget adulthood with the hidden undertone;

the fear of losing love, out of proportion it is blown.

The thought of you becoming a star

did not occur to you or I

but as I held your hand tighter than ever

a plaintive comma slipped from my eye.

It landed on your cheek

and trickled down into your skin

making me think of that little stone

and a future that could have been

extraordinary.

But now you’re like the little stone

somewhere lost underneath the soil,

living only in my memories

which as some point will rot and spoil.

My lover when I cry at night

I’m calmed by your eternal enchantment.

All because you threw the stone

that landed on the embankment.
